Now here’s something that every city should be so envious of—an internet connection with a 1 Gbps (that is 1000 Million-bits-per-second) bandwidth. Compare that to your current ISP connection!
EPB Fiber Optics, Chattanooga, Tennessee’s local fiber-to-the-premises-network, announced last September 13 the first and only 1 Gbps broadband internet service in the United States, in partnership with Alcatel-Lucent. The service is currently available for residents and business premises around the city of Chattanooga.
As of today, EBP provide services to at least 100,000 homes and business establishments in Chattanooga, both in the metro and rural areas. Given the 1 gigabit internet service, it is therefore the fastest in the U.S. so far, and is trying to rally with international internet services that offers such broadband speed.
This innovative and exciting broadband service is powered by Alcatel-Lucent’s Gigabit Passive Optical Network or GPON technology. This new network of Chattanooga could provide speeds of up to 1 Gigabit per second, 200 times the speed of the current average of internet speed in the whole country. Once every residential home and business entity inside the EPB’s 600 square-mile territory, with nine counties, gain access to the new network, this venture will eventually be the most extensive service within its industry across the United States.
As told by Chattanooga Area Chamber of Commerce’s CEO and President, Tom Edd Wilson, Chattanooga is the city that stands as the current laboratory for today’s advancement and tomorrow’s much developed companies.
The subscription to the service is actually on sale since September 13. Now, if you’re such an Internet nut and would give everything just to experience the service, you might have considered changing your address and make Chattanooga your new city. But before you jump into your car and drive all the way to Tennessee, you should be ready to pay $350 a month for this amazing broadband service.
However, this Chattanooga owned broadband is not the same, or connected to Google’s anticipated 1 Gbps service, which might mean that Chattanooga would not take the record of having the fastest Internet connection in the U.S. to itself for too long. Nevertheless, it is still a thing of wonder and people of Chattanooga have all the reason to be thrilled and feel so lucky.
